CHAPTER ELEVEN

Minnesota

Day Seven

Logan paced the long perimeter of the rectangular, fenced-in compound, his booted feet moving in a steady cadence across withering grass and cracked asphalt in an effort to both calm himself and to assess the strong and weak points of the community athletic facility outside of Minnetonka, Minnesota at the same time. The air was acrid, the smell penetrating into his mouth leaving a bitter aftertaste as he moved along his track. As he walked, he fiddled with the flat rock that looked like a bottle cap that he carried in his pocket. Braden had given it to him just a few days ago, the little boy whose trust he’d broken by leaving him behind.

Clenching his fist around the token, Logan sucked in the nasty air as he fought against the building rage he’d carried for the past seventy-two hours, but the anger continued to pound, demanding release. Logan tried to apply logic as he paced, giving his body a small measure of relief from the grip of anger lodged in his gut. Things were beyond his control, just as they had been when he’d been brought to the army-controlled facility against his wishes. Keeping a sharp eye out for changes in his environment was a way to bend what was out of his control back into it, but today’s circuit of the mile and a quarter perimeter was having the opposite effect. He grimaced at the overnight developments of extra sets of guards placed every hundred yards and the addition of curled barbed wire atop the twelve foot chain link fence.

Logan nodded politely as he passed each pair of soldiers equipped with fully automatic rifles, just as he had done on his prior assessments, but as usual, didn’t get a response from the soldiers except for a tightening of their grip on their rifle and a tense set to their shoulders. Their rigid stance and tight lips didn’t welcome any conversation, so he walked on. The fact that they were stationed facing inward toward the refugees affirmed his suspicion that they were there to keep them contained, instead of being there to protect them. From his counts over the past days, Logan had ascertained there was one heavily armed soldier for every ten refugees, as well as a command staff and a support staff of cooks, cleaners and maintenance personnel.

He reached the rear part of the compound, which held the tents and mess for the soldiers, a large array of transport vehicles, and metal storage units which housed the guns and ammunition. He presumed his bicycle was locked in one of these storage sheds, as they’d taken it from him “for safekeeping” on arrival, another weight on his mind and his emotions.

Logan slowed his pace as he edged behind the soldier’s section, keeping an eye out for anything that would help him get out. There was no second entrance to the encampment, and the coiled barbed wire stretched along the rear fencing just as it did everywhere else.
